Features

Long-form expositions. Edited to be read in one sitting.

The shape of the prime distribution

What the Riemann zeta function knows that we don't. A tour from Gauss's first guess to the explicit formula, with interactive plots of π(x) and its corrections.

Number theoryInteractive
№0212 min · By Theo Park

Knots in four dimensions, untied

Every knot can be undone if you let it pass through itself in 4D. We illustrate why — and what's left over when the knot is gone.

TopologyInteractive

Why the heat equation forgets

Diffusion smooths everything in time. A short look at what gets lost, and what is preserved, when the heat equation runs.

In the Wild

Mathematics applied where you didn't expect it.

How a queue at the airport is really a Poisson process

If you've ever stood in a security line wondering 'why is this taking so long', you've felt the M/M/1 queue. The math is more forgiving than the line.

Strange attractors at the kitchen sink

Drip, drip, chaos. The Hénon map, as seen from a leaky tap.

№063 min · S. Lin

A walk on the Cayley graph

What the symmetry group of a cube actually looks like when you draw it out.

№075 min · J. Asare

The geometry of probability

Two coherent sources, one Bayes update — the same picture, twice.
